Trial set for woman, 19, accused of fatally stabbing dog in Wahiawa

A circuit judge set trial for a 19-year-old woman accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend’s dog in Wahiawa.
Liciela Agpalza-Butolph appeared at her arraignment before Judge Melanie May in Circuit Court via circuit video link from the Oahu Community Correctional Center on a charge of first-degree cruelty to animals. The offense is a class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Deputy Public Defender Doris Lum entered a not guilty plea to the charge on Agpalza-Butolph’s behalf.
Lum requested supervised release, saying she could live with her mother who resides in Wahiawa.
Deputy Prosecutor Danica Swenson argued Agpalza-Butolph stabbed her boyfriend’s dog 11 times with a knife on June 20 and fled to Washington sometime after police released her pending investigation.
May denied the request for supervised release noting she is a flight risk and poses a danger to the community based on the violent nature of the offense. The judge confirmed her bail at $20,000 and set trial for October.

A $20,000 bench warrant was issued Aug. 6 for Agpalza-Butolph’s arrest after an Oahu grand jury indicted her with first-degree cruelty to animals. Deputy sheriffs arrested her at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport Aug. 16. upon her return to Hawaii.
