Waimanalo protester Kuike Kamakea-Ohelo has done Hawaii’s people a service by conceding the political as well as cultural issues presented by the Hawaiian protest movement (“Work would desecrate Waimanalo site, foes say,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 12).
History has left us with complex burdens we did not create, even though we must deal with them.
Conflicting legal, religious, economic and cultural values contend for influence. Finding satisfactory resolutions will demand patient hard work by us all.
Simplistic, stereotypical and ideological argument will not serve well. Hawaii has presented itself to the world as an amicable multicultural society. The future will reveal whether we can maintain that claim.
