Po‘okela Awards honor excellence in Hawaii theater

Manoa Valley Theatre’s Hawaii-premiere production of “Allegiance,” the George Takei musical about the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, received awards for excellence in 10 categories Monday evening at the 2019 Po‘okela Awards. The MVT production’s awards included Overall Musical, Leading Female in the Musical to Kristian Lei, Non-Resident Guest Artist to Ethan Le Phong (center) and Featured Male in a Musical to Dann Seki (right).

Diamond Head Theatre and Manoa Valley Theatre received 25 awards each as the Hawaii State Theatre Council announced the recipients of the 2019 Po‘okela Awards for excellence Monday evening at the Koolau Golf Club in Kaneohe. The University of Hawaii theater program was next in line with 12 awards, and Kumu Kahua was one behind that with a total of 11.

Eight other theater groups — All the World’s a Stage, Chaminade University, Hawaii Pacific University, the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival, the Hawaiian Mission Houses, Leeward Community College, Paliku Theater/Windward Community College and The Actors’ Group (TAG) — also received multiple awards.

One group that has received awards in previous years, The Playbuilders of Hawai‘i Theatre Company, was officially dormant for adjudication purposes during the 2018-2019 theater season. A second group, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, chooses not to participate in the Po‘okela Awards program, and so its productions, playwrights, actors and stage designers are not eligible for awards.

Up to six honorees can be recognized in most categories.
