Hawaii outside hitter Colton Cowell put down a team-high 16 kills, but it was not enough as the U.S. fell to Chile in Wednesday’s men’s volleyball pool-play opener at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
Cowell, a rising senior, added an ace in the 25-17, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22 loss at the Callao Sports Center. Former Rainbow Warrior All-American setter Joe Worsley, who played all four sets and started the last two, had two aces and a kill, while former UH hitter Kupono Fey played the entire match at libero.
The U.S., which is coached by Warriors assistant coach Milan Zarkovic, continues pool play today with a match against Mexico and Friday against Brazil. The semifinals are Saturday and medal play Sunday.
Laguna Niguel keeps lead at Billfish
Laguna Niguel Billfish Club-Firestein continues to lead at the 60th annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament with 1,500 points.
The father-son team of Martin and Mitchel Firestein landed a Pacific blue marlin estimated at 140 pounds. The team also tagged and released a yellow fin tuna (ahi) that weighed in at 129.9 pounds.
Manuel advances at U.S. Open of Surfing
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel posted a score of 11.77, moving on to the third round of the U.S. Open of Surfing on Wednesday at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Manuel’s score was good enough to finish second in her heat, qualifying her to advance. She joins fellow local surfer Summer Macedo, who advanced on Tuesday.
Alessa Quizon was eliminated in her Round 2 heat.
