Olympic stadium nears completion
TOKYO>> The construction site of the new National Stadium in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, the main venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, is nearly 90% complete.
Construction of the main building started in December 2016. The exterior portions are almost finished, and work will now shift to inside the stadium, such as turf on the field. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in November.
Work on the roof, which is considered the most difficult portion, was complete in May. It bears a distinctive, doughnut- like shape that covers the spectators’ seats. Those are colored in five earth tones — white, greenish yellow, gray, dark green and dark brown.
About 45,000 seats out of 60,000 have been installed.
“The construction is going well. We’re at the busiest time for interior work,” said a spokesman for the Japan Sport Council among the groups that headed up the project.
Wood from all of the country’s 47 prefectures is being included in the construction of the stadium. To beat the heat, 185 fans are set up to create wind currents, and eight mist machines have also been installed.
