Marines killed on Tarawa returned to U.S. soil

From the Republic of Kiribati to Hangar 19 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam the remains of at least 22 veterans of the Battle of Tarawa in World War II were carried by Marine pallbearers Wednesday.

The flag-draped transfer cases containing the remains of service members lost during the Battle of Tarawa arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Wednesday aboard a C-17 cargo plane. Their arrival marked the beginning of the painstaking process of identification by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency lab and eventual return of the remains to family members.
