Synopsis: Hydrocution, or cold water shock, can be deadly. Many people are unaware of this; as was I until three people died in the recent heat wave in France. What should it be called in Hawaiian?
Aloha mai käkou e nä hoa hoæomanawanui i nä lä kalaæihi o ke kau wela. He wä hoæi ia e höæoluæolu ai i loko o nä wai kapakai e kaæapuni ana i ko käkou pae æäina aloha nei. A he ‘oluæolu nö ka æoluæolu … a hiki i kona lilo æana i mea e makaæu ai. æO ia ihola kaæu e häpai nei, a ma muli ia o ka make æana o kekahi poæe e æauæau kai ana ma Palani he æelua pule aku nei.
He make æana këia, aia i loko o ke kai (a me kekahi mau æano kinowai paha), æaæole naæe ia he hopena i æike æia e ka häwäwä æike æole i ka æau a piholo aku i lalo o ka æili kai. æO ka poæe mäkaukau i ka æau kekahi e lilo ana i ka lima æümiæi o ka make.
æAkahi hoæi au a lohe no këia æano ulia pöæino. æO ua poæe pöpilikia lä ma Palani, e æimi ana läkou i ala æolu e pakele ai i ka wela kalaæihi o ka lä. Aia ka wela o ka lä, ua piæi aæe a ka 113˚ Palenaheika, a æo ke kai, he 59˚ wale nö. I ke komo æana o ia poæe, ua lilo ia köä ma waena o ka wela a me ka huæihuæi i mea e pilikia ai ke ola kino. Hele a pau ka hana a nä lökino, a ua pau hoæi ka pana a ka puæuwai o kekahi, a æo ia ihola kona mea i make ai. æEä, æaæole nö i huæihuæi loa ka wai. æO ka loli æana o ke kino mai ka wela a ke anu, æo ia ke kumu i pau ai nä lökino.
I koæu käkau æana i këia moæolelo, ua hele a wela ka lolo i ka noæonoæo i hua no ke kapa æana i ia pilikia ma ka æölelo Hawaiæi. Ma ka namu naæe, ke kapa æia nei i ka “hydrocution”, he hua hoæopilipili i ka huaæölelo haole “electrocution”. Ma ka æölelo Hawaiæi, ua haku æia he huaæölelo hou no electrocution, æo æümiæi uila. Eia naæe, penei ia ma ka puke wehewehe a Pukui mä: “loaæa i ka uila”. Ua æano känalua au i ka hahai æana i ka manaæo haole ma ka haku æana i hua no hydrocution. Kainö ua like ka hana a ka uila me ka hopena ma muli o ka wai. æAæole kä! No laila, kuæihë au i ke kapa aku i ka hydrocution he æümiæi wai.
Ma muli o ka huæihuæi o nä aæa koko, hana nui ka pauma æana i ke koko, a æo ia ka mea e kauhola ai. Eia kahi mea æäpiki. I ka haku æia o ka hua æölelo “electrocution”, ua käpili æia mai æo “electro-” me “execute”, no ka mea, he æano pepehi kanaka hou ia i hapa mai kona æano mänaæonaæo i ko ke kaæawe, ke kï pü, a me ka æoki poæo (ma Palani). E like me këlä mau mea, he hana ka æümiæi uila e lawelawe æia e kekahi æäkena. æAæole ia he ulia wale nö. E aho nö paha ka wehewehe æana a Pukui mä, no ka mea, he hopena æo “loaæa”, æaæole nö ia he hana a kahi æäkena e lawelawe ai.
No laila, no ke kuhi æana i ia mea he hydrocution ma ka æölelo Hawaiæi, he halahü ka hoæopilipili æana iä æümiæi uila, æo ia hoæi ma ke kapa æana he æümiæi wai. æAæole ia he hana i lawelawe æia e kahi æäkena. He ulia æiæo nö e pilikia ai ka mea æike æole i ia hopena. æAæole paha e launa ka manaæo o æümiæi wai. Ua pili aku naæe ka manaæo o Pukui mä ma ke koho æana iä loaæa, æo ia hoæi, æo ka loaæa ia i ka huæi o ka wai.
