Spare for Change hosting event
Spare for Change will be hosting its second Maui Nui 500 event July 27 at Maui Nui Golf Club.
The tournament is the largest fundraiser for Maui pro David Havens’ Spare for Change non-profit, “created to offer players of all levels the opportunity to learn the game through free instruction and recycled golf clubs.”
Since its founding in 2011, Spare for Change has distributed more than 23,000 free golf clubs to players of all ages and experience, and provided scholarships and free instruction.
The fundraiser is looking for 20 players to play 100 holes of golf and donate money through sponsorships to the organization. Cash, food, drink and prize donations are also encouraged, along with hole sponsors.
To play or donate, or to donate clubs and for more information, contact Havens at david@spareforchange.org or 808-298-8012, or visit spareforchange.org.
Morikawa holds tourney at Klipper
Hawaii’s Georgia E. Morikawa (GEM) Center will have its second annual Golf Classic Aug. 2 at Kaneohe Klipper. Registration deadline is July 19.
The theme of the fundraiser is “Building a Hawaii Center for Deaf Keiki and Kupuna.”
Format is three-person scramble. Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $10,000 to help build a community center to service the deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind community — an idea that has been in the works more than 45 years.
