Protecting our harbors and maritime security continues to be paramount to our multi-island state. The continuous threats from a natural disaster or a potential transnational terrorism remain a high priority and have become part of our daily lives.
We will be successful only with the continued concerted efforts of government agencies, private sector, law enforcement, the public and innovative engineering and technology that establish and maintain mitigation and protective measures to safeguard our ports and serve as a deterrent.
As a multi-island state that imports more than 80% of its consumables, with 98% arriving via waterborne transportation, we cannot afford to do otherwise. Shipping is the most international of all the world’s industries. It is our collective fiduciary responsibility to protect this critical infrastructure, and that is what we must continue to do cooperatively through unified partnerships that are in place.
