Pretty soon, the only foam to be seen on Hawaii island will be the kind from waves crashing on shore. As far as plate lunches go, Styrofoam is history.
The Big Island county’s ban on polystyrene (the generic term for the white stuff) is now prohibited for takeout single-use containers. The chemicals in polystyrene, a petrochemical, leach into the air and water and on one’s skin, among other issues.
Perhaps the counties have to be the laboratories for the islands. A proposed statewide ban failed again this year.
