I have monitored Chinatown almost daily for several hours, starting about six months ago, and noticed many kupuna falling and hurting themselves due to laxity in law enforcement on our major commercial sidewalks and Kekaulike Mall.
Encroachment into public space and almost daily violations of littering, waste and clutter cause major falls by shoppers and visitors, and create unsanitary conditions.
The city could demarcate with broad red lines the allowed 18 inches on all Chinatown sidewalks and 48 inches at Kekaulike Mall for merchandise display and sales. Police and parks enforcement officers would not have to use tape measures for violations each time. With these clear visual demarcation lines, our shoppers and public can be given safe passage on these tight sidewalks.
It is very disheartening to observe chronic violations by a few lawless merchants who continue daily to encroach into public space.
