I am in total agreement with the Board of Water Supply (“Transfer or take down Haiku Stairs,” Star-Advertiser, Our View, June 28).
Other than BWS, no one seems to care about the liability factor. Sure, climbing those stairs provides outstanding views of our aina.
However, when someone gets hurt, needs help or gets lost, they call our brave first responders to put their lives in jeopardy. Then it’s the taxpayers who foot the bill.
Tourists don’t care if they get charged for these services. Once they leave the islands, they ignore their responsibilities.
Friends of Haiku Stairs should get together, form a hui and take over maintaining the stairs. But most importantly, they should be required to have sufficient liability insurance, in case the city is sued, as we often are.
Better yet, tear down the stairs. We have so many other legally accessible trails on our beautiful islands.
