Jarred Kaneshiro pleaded guilty to second-degree extortion when he admitted attempting to blackmail a female into sending him additional nude photos (“Man gets probation for extortion scheme seeking nude photos,” Star-Advertiser, June 28).

These charges were Class C felonies, punishable by up to five years in prison. Kanashiro asked the court to defer his sentence, and was quoted as saying, “I regret everything I had done because it puts my future at risk.”

Kaneshiro will not go to jail, even though he shared some nude photos of this female with “friends” on Snapchat. Authorities were unable to identify these “friends,” or whether he still had those or other images on his phone or other devices because “he did not disclose that.”

What the heck is wrong with this judge? It sounds like Kaneshiro was anything but fully cooperative, and his only remorse was for his self-inflicted wound. People make mistakes, but if they are unwilling to take ownership of those mistakes and cooperate fully, they should suffer the consequences. What about the poor female? Kaneshiro was not the victim, he was the criminal.
