Credit the Friends of the Haiku Stairs for their efforts to not only continue maintenance but also to present, over and over, a logical and practical managed-access program that benefits both visitors and local residents alike (“Honolulu Board of Water Supply proposes removing Haiku Stairs,” Star-Advertiser, June 25). The draft environmental impact statement also covers the pros and cons of all proposed approaches very clearly as well.
Now is the time for the mayor and legislators to finally step up to the plate and make the call in favor of preservation, and abandon the idea of spending close to $1 million or more of taxpayer money to remove, at considerable risk, this iconic and unique structure.
