Hawaii hitter Colton Cowell put down seven kills to help the U.S. defeat Puerto Rico for fifth place at the Pan American Cup men’s volleyball tournament in Colima, Mexico.
Cowell, a rising senior for the Rainbow Warriors, added three blocks. Former Rainbow Warriors All-America setter Joe Worsley was one of three setters who played in the 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 sweep, while former UH hitter Kupono Fey, who was the backup libero, did not play.
“It’s nice going back home with a win, even if it’s for fifth place,” said Warriors associate coach Milan Zarkovic, head coach of the U.S. team. “There are important lessons to learn from; there is a lot to work on. We are looking forward on continue practicing as most of these players will be competing at the Pan American Games.”
Former Hawaii athletes Taylor Crabb, Karissa Cook advance in Seattle
Former Rainbow Wahine beach player Karissa Cook advanced to the semifinals of the AVP Seattle Open, as did Punahou alum Taylor Crabb.
Cook and partner Jace Pardon eliminated top-seeded Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil 21-18, 13-21, 15-11. Next up for the pair is defending champs Emily Day and Betsi Flint.
Crabb and partner Jake Gibb, the top seed on the men’s side, edged out Chase Budinger and Casey Patterson 21-19, 21-19. They will face Billy Allen and Stafford Slick.
Carissa Moore, John John Florence advance in surf meet in Brazil
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore and John John Florence both advanced to today’s quarterfinals in the Oi Rio Pro in Rio de Janeiro.
Moore eliminated Brazil’s Taina Hinckel by a score of 11.00 to 7.40. She will advance to face another Brazilian in Tatiana Weston-Webb.
Florence defeated Australia’s Wade Carmichael in his heat, but hurt his knee. Florence said that he tweaked the same knee that he injured last season and will get it checked before making a decision.
Manu O Ke Kai claims win in Haleiwa
Manu O Ke Kai took home first place at the Haleiwa Outrigger Regatta at Haleiwa Beach Park on Saturday, claiming 18 events.
Manu O Ke Kai tallied a score of 108, more than double the next closest AAA competitor, Alapa Hoe Canoe Club (52). Kaneohe had 51 points to claim the AA victory, and Waikiki Yacht Club took home the win in A Division with 25.
