Kamehameha Schools and St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii are at odds with the remaining settlement for child abuse by Dr. Robert Browne (“Kamehameha Schools and St. Francis lock horns over sex abuse settlement,” Star-Advertiser, June 16.) I hope that Kamehameha Schools will pay the final settlement.
St. Francis is a nonprofit that has helped provide Hawaii’s people with outstanding health care since the days of Saint Mother Marianne Cope and other Franciscan sisters in the late 19th century.
The article said that Browne had his private psychiatric practice at the hospital. He treated school patients in his private practice, not as an employee.
Sister Maureen Keleher headed the hospital during much of the abuse period.
Having known her, I do not believe she would have knowingly tolerated pedophile abuse. Sr. Keleher was beyond reproach.
I hope matters are settled amicably between the two parties, and that Kamehameha Schools will graciously pick up the settlement balance.
