Part of Hawaiiana is being loyal to the land. We, as residents of this state, must respect this and question something that is being planned that goes against this value.
It is with consternation that I read about the location of a playground displacing part of the natural beauty of Ala Moana Regional Park. Often mentioned is the construction of a place for special-needs children. What prevents these children from utilizing the wonderful green grass, open space and beautiful beach? Yes, there are many necessary upgrades that need to be done, but not in the fashion of concrete and zip lines.
Of special concern is the city’s ability to maintain the playground after it is built. Both the city and the state have a poor record on matters such as this. The poor roads and median strips, with nothing but weeds as well as accumulated trash, are examples.
Let’s make wise use of one of our natural resources and, if necessary, find another place for this playground.
