Man, 23, dies after crashing motorcycle on H-3
One man is dead after losing control of his motorcycle on the H-3 freeway around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, Honolulu police said.
All eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed until just before 4 a.m. as police investigated the crash.
According to the Honolulu Police Department, a 23-year-old Honolulu man was among a pack of motorcyclists traveling “at a high rate of speed” on the H-3 just after the Likelike Highway offramp when another rider, a 20-year-old Honolulu man, drifted into the 23-year-old’s lane.
As a result, the 23-year-old lost control of his motorcycle and left the freeway, where he crashed into a guardrail and was ejected down a grass embankment into a ravine on the side of the roadway.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before transporting him in “extremely critical condition” to an area hospital, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services. He later died as a result of his injuries, police said.
The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. While speed appears to be a contributing factor, police said neither drugs or alcohol appear to be involved.
