The second full season of Oahu Interscholastic Association-Interscholastic League of Honolulu interleague football games begins in August.
The regular-season schedule, released Thursday by OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka, includes two tripleheaders and three doubleheaders at Aloha Stadium.
One big change was caused when the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams announced a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys at Aloha Stadium on Aug. 17.
Tanaka found a way to move the games he had penciled in for that day. The eventual answer was to move that Aug. 17 slate of games two days earlier, to a Thursday.
The schedule came out about six weeks later than last year, but Tanaka said rescheduling that particular weekend’s games didn’t cause the delay. Instead, he said, it was a matter of making sure that all the schools and teams and host sites would be available on certain days throughout the whole season.
“It’s never easy,” Tanaka said Thursday night about putting the schedule together.
“Trying to make sure both leagues were OK with all games and switching it around when there was a conflict.”
Some fans may want to circle the dates of the tripleheaders and doubleheaders at the stadium. It gives people a chance to see multiple teams in one day.
On Sept. 14, football connoisseurs who go to the stadium get Punahou vs. Waianae, Mililani vs. Kamehameha, and then Kahuku vs. Saint Louis in the main event.
The Oct. 5 tripleheader has games in the three separate divisions — Pearl City vs. Pac-Five in Division II, Leilehua vs. ‘Iolani in D-I, and Kahuku vs. Punahou in the Open Division.
An ILH-only doubleheader is scheduled for Sept. 20, at Aloha Stadium — ‘Iolani vs. Damien, and Punahou vs. Saint Louis.
The other stadium doubleheaders are Kailua vs. Damien, followed by Mililani vs. Saint Louis on Sept. 27, and then Moanalua vs. Damien, followed by Mililani vs. Punahou on Oct. 11.
