A 32-foot sailing vessel sits aground off Magic Island. The vessel reportedly ran aground Wednesday evening en route from Sand Island to Ala Wai Boat Harbor.

A sailboat on its first trip with a new owner ran aground Wednesday night at Magic Island, prompting Coast Guard and city Ocean Safety officials to warn the public to stay out of the water in the area.

The Coast Guard launched its 45-foot response boat after they received a report of the grounded vessel from the Honolulu Fire Department at 8:40 p.m.

The owner was en route from Sand Island to the Ala Wai Boat Harbor when he struck a breakwater at Magic Island, according to Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Mario Villani. It was the first time the owner took the boat out sailing since he bought it, officials said.

Coast Guard officials said the owner was the only person aboard and swam safely to shore. No injuries were reported.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Amanda Wyrick said a sheen earlier spotted in the water near the boat had dissipated as of 1 p.m. “There is no fuel on the boat,” she added.

The owner is working with his insurance company and a local salvage company to remove the vessel, but it was not immediately known when that would happen.

The beach remains open, but the Coast Guard and lifeguards advise people to stay out of the water in the surrounding area for safety.

The weather at the time of the grounding was 3-foot seas and 15 mph winds, officials said.
