The University of Hawaii was a winner on — and off — the court at the Big West Conference men’s volleyball championship.
Along with the championship trophy and the accompanying berth in the NCAA tournament, the UH athletic department said it netted nearly $65,000 from the three-day tournament in April that drew more than 20,000 fans to the Stan Sheriff Center.
“It was a very successful tourney for us,” athletic director David Matlin said.
The athletic department’s cut of concessions revenue under terms of the contract with its operator was approximately $47,600 and its share of overall tournament profits from the conference pool was $16,500.
Additionally, as the host, UH was reimbursed $39,000 for operational expenses.
The athletic department does not share in parking revenues, which are retained by the Manoa parking office.
The Big West said it netted $99,000, marking the first time the event has made money. All six participating teams got $16,500 shares.
“It (the tournament) certainly met — and exceeded — our expectations from a financial perspective,” said Rob Halvaks, Big West Conference chief financial officer. Halvaks, who headed the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation when it held tournaments here in the 1990s, said the returns, “were not something that I was unfamiliar with (here).”
The 2020 tournament is scheduled to be held at UC Irvine and conference directors will meet this summer to choose sites for the 2021 tournament and beyond.
