About 50 or 60 people took part in a May Day “love-in” in a Tantalus clearing. In addition to dancing around a maypole with purple, red and white crepe paper streamers, there were games of touch football, follow the leader and king of the mountain, as well as cloud-watching, napping and prowling in the woods. “Some of them wouldn’t talk to me, but I guess you could say they’re just having a picnic in the sun,” said Honolulu Police Department offi cer Robert Cogswell, who had been assigned to monitor the event.

STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / JUNE 25, 1961

Lester Kanemaru, 13, took home the title of Hawaii Soap Box Derby champion and also won an allexpenses- paid trip to Akron, Ohio, where he will compete in the 24th running of the All-American Soap Box Derby. Among those Lester defeated was his 11-year-old brother, Jared. The race was held at the Pali Golf Course.
