Hawaii’s Carissa Moore and John John Florence advanced to the semifinals of the Margaret River Pro, the fourth stop of the World Surf League Championship Tour, on Sunday in West Australia.
Surfing in 4- to 6-foot waves at Main Break, Moore defeated rookie Brisa Hennessy of Costa Rica in the quarterfinal round 13.84-8.50. Moore moves into a semifinal heat vs. Lakey Peterson.
On the men’s side, Florence heads into a semifinal heat against Caio Ibelli of Brazil after defeating fellow Hawaii surfer Sebastian Zietz 13.67-12.40 in the round of 16 and Italo Ferreira 17.73-15.36 in the quarterfinals. In his round of 16 heat, Hawaii’s Seth Moniz beat Australia’s Jack Robinson 14.20-9.97. Kolohe Andino eliminated Moniz 13.90-13.34 in the quarterfinals.
Lanikai wins OHCRA opener
Lanikai recorded 218 points to win the AAA Division (31-45 events) in the Clement D. Paiaina Regatta on Sunday at Keehi Lagoon, the first regatta of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association season.
Outpacing second-place Hui Nalu’s 156 points, Lanikai won 18 of the 45 races. The club took second in nine others and placed third in eight more.
In the AA Division (16-30 events), Keahiakahoe Canoe Club took top honors with 62 points.
Hui Lanakila Canoe Club won the A Division (0-15 events) with 41 points.
