I realize that for many people, the battle over the right to an abortion is the hill they choose to die on. I try my best to see nuance and find value in the passionate beliefs on both sides of the argument.
However, when I read the quote from Louisiana state Sen. John Milkovich, who said, “God values human life, and so do the people of Louisiana,” I have to admit I scoffed a bit.
I’m assuming he’s referring to the Judeo-Christian God, who in the Old Testament commits genocide against his own creation (Noah’s flood) as well as countless mass killings (Sodom and Gomorrah, plagues, famines, killing of first-born sons, to name a few), many of which must have resulted in the deaths of pregnant women and their unborn children.
I suggest that if you choose to use religion to demonstrate the sanctity of human life, you might want to choose a different god.
