Kudos to the Honolulu police officer who kept his cool when a 36-year-old man attacked him with a screwdriver in hopes of trading homelessness for a behind-bars residence. An Oahu grand jury on Thursday indicted Remington Troy Guyton with assaulting the officer and attempting to steal his firearm.
After the attack, Guyton reportedly told police it had been a bid for life in prison and that “other officers would have shot or Tasered me for what I did.” While the officer involved sustained a stabbing in the jaw area and punches to face, he managed to subdue Guyton without firing a weapon.
More tourists, but not more money
While Hawaii visitor arrivals in April rose by 7% over the year prior, spending has fallen by almost as much. And less spending means less tax revenue to pay for the wear and tear.
The irony is that the same thing that lures tourists here is what can distract them from spending. Who wants to while away the hours in a posh boutique when you could be in nature? Well, some people do.
Many more of them go to Dubai, the spot on the planet where visitors spend the most. Not as much to look at, though.
