Hawaii junior Petra Melounova on Thursday became the first player in school history — men’s or women’s — to earn Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division I All-America honors.
Melounova, of the Czech Republic, advanced to the NCAA championships’ round of 16 to earn the honor.
Melounova, who finished the season with a 15-5 record and No. 52 ranking, was forced to serve underhanded during the season because of a shoulder injury.
She was the third Big West player to earn three conference player of the year honors.
Raiders’ Agbayani honored by Gatorade
‘Iolani senior Aleia Agbayani was named the Gatorade Hawaii softball player of the year on Thursday.
Agbayani, a left-handed pitcher, first baseman and outfielder, led the Raiders to a 19-5 record and the Division I state championship this season.
Agbayani batted .636 with 49 runs scored, 16 home runs, 57 RBIs and a 1.455 slugging percentage. She also drew 16 walks, stole 15 bases and did not strike out in 93 plate appearances. In the circle, Agbayani compiled an 8-2 record with a 3.60 ERA and earned victories in the state semifinal and title games.
Agbayani, the daughter of ‘Iolani coach and former major leaguer Benny Agbayani, will attend Cal in the fall.
