The University of Hawaii moved up one place to seventh in the Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Commissioner’s Cup is a measure of overall athletic success in the league for the 2018-19 academic year.
UC Santa Barbara won the cup, while last year’s champion, Cal State Fullerton, was second. The Big West began the Commissioner’s Cup in 1998-99. Standing is determined on a basis of average points accumulated through final regular-season finish in each sport and the number of competing teams.
UH was eighth in 2017-18, its lowest finish in the nine-member conference since rejoining in 2012-13. Its best finish was third in that 2012-13 season.
Fifteen of UH’s 19 NCAA-sponsored sports compete in the Big West Conference. Football competes in the Mountain West and other sports in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UH’s highest point totals this year came from women’s volleyball (160), women’s basketball (140), water polo (140) and softball (140).
UH is 46th in the College Directors’ Cup standings, which measure athletic success across all Division I teams in regular and postseason. Those standings will be finalized at the end of the month.
