Elza Edsman poses for Rolf Armstrong, a well-known New York poster artist. Edsman will be added to his already long list of calendar girls in January. After four months of vagabonding through the South Seas, Armstrong is now visiting the islands and is at the Halekulani. Constantly on the alert for art material, Armstrong is here for an indefi nite visit and might do some sketches for future posters. Edsman was Miss Hawaiian Islands in the fi rst Miss Universe Pageant in 1952, in Long Beach, Calif. The Kaimuki High graduate and Aloha Airlines hostess was chosen to represent the territory of Hawaii.

Hawaiian Dredging and Construction Co. workers appear to have found a solution to the downtown parking situation, as this picture shows. Workers are using the $2.7 million Fort Street Mall as their private parking lot until the facility is officially turned over to the city next week.

Dear Mom: Hawaii ain’t so bad. Our (Army) recruiting officer promised that we would fly first class for maneuvers on the Big Island, and he wasn’t kidding. We just got back from 11 days at Pohakuloa and flew there and back on Hawaiian Air. Sarge said no grunt planes were available, but told us we’d get in-flight movies for sure when Pan Am jets us to Poland. Your loving son, Fred.

STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / OCTOBER 11, 1970

Eurythmic dancers, a troupe made up of 18 senior girls from Sacred Hearts Academy, perform at a Celebration of Faith rally at the Waikiki Shell. More than 4,000 island Roman Catholics attended the first such pageant to be held here.
