Former Rainbow Warriors All-Americans Taylor Averill, a middle blocker, and libero Tui Tuileta were among six players with Hawaii ties named to the 25-man U.S. roster for the FIVB Volleyball Nations League that begins Friday in Poland.
Previous Olympians named were setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha), libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) and setter Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani). Also selected was setter Micah Ma’a (Punahou).
Each week, coaches will choose 14 players from the 25-man roster to compete in the VNL preliminary matches as well as the final round.
The U.S. opens play in Katowice against Brazil. Also in this pool are Poland and Australia. VNL play moves to Russia (June 7-9), France (June 14-16) and Hoffman Estates, Ill. (June 21-23).
The U.S. is hosting the VNL final round July 10-14 in Chicago and therefore automatically qualifies.
Also, Rainbow Warriors All-American opposite Rado Parapunov was named to the 25-player VNL roster for his native Bulgaria.
