It’s unfortunate that two high-profile assault cases ended with the criminals being given probation and no jail time.
MMA fighter Arnold Berdon was given a slap on the wrist for violently assaulting his wife (“Hawaii mixed martial arts fighter Arnold Berdon gets 4 years probation for assaulting wife,” Star-Advertiser, Top News, May 16). Isea Taumoepeau received probation for viciously attacking two Japanese tourists in Kakaako.
These sentences are too light and send the wrong signal to our residents and tourists. The judges involved should have given jail time to these criminals for their violent actions. Our community should be outraged by such weak sentences from our judicial system. Judges need to protect our families and children, and these decisions do just the opposite.
