Joel Maimon lamented that drivers on the H-1 seem to consider the posted speed limits as merely a suggestion, and that many, if not most, drivers go much faster (“Speed limits on H-1 ignored by drivers,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, May 21). He’s obviously a person for whom following the law is important, and taking a little extra time to get where he’s going is just fine.
He should understand that the speed limits in Hawaii are set much lower than they are on the mainland, and that it’s a common understanding, true or not, that speeds here are intentionally set 10 miles slower than they should be, figuring that people are going to drive 10 miles faster anyway.
Maimon also mentioned observing the speed limit in the left lane and getting dirty looks from drivers going around him. The left lane is the “express” lane, and is supposed to be used only to pass traffic in the other lanes.
Purposely driving slower than the other traffic is more dangerous because cars have to pass on the right, leading to road rage events.
