The Maunakea Liquor & Grocery store should be denied a liquor license and its hours of operation curtailed (“Panel seeks to revoke Maunakea liquor store license,” Star-Advertiser, May 17).
For the past 20 years, I’ve been voluntarily involved in what was hoped to be a renewal of Chinatown, but those efforts have been thwarted by operators like this. Many entrepreneurs have been driven out of the neighborhood by the criminality, homelessness and perceived danger that infests the area, particularly after dark.
Last week I stopped by the store mid-afternoon to make a purchase and was followed in by a fellow cursing at and threatening me. It was business as usual for the store, but the last straw for me. I’ve been abused, hustled and challenged in that immediate area too many times.
I made my purchase — walking back to my car repelled by the stench of urine, feces and the deranged man following me — and decided it was time to quit Hawaii.
Ciao.
