GOLD COINS MARK A NEW ERA: A staffer at the Takashimaya department store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, holds up a set of pure gold coins that commemorated the change of era on May 1. The coin at left bears the kanji for “Heisei,” the former era; the one at right says “Reiwa,” the name of the new era. The coins, about 3 inches tall, were sold in sets last month for $11.6 million.
