City Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi is 100% wrong (“FTA insists Honolulu step up its funding of rail,” Star-Advertiser, May 8)!
She and other City Council members have a duty, an obligation, to their constituents to plant their feet firmly in reality and stand up to the unfeasible boondoggle called the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation.
Recognize that there is no bottom line to the budget, no firm final plan for the last portion of the line to Ala Moana. The cost is unknown. Given the last 10 years, it will likely continue to increase beyond what is contracted.
Council Budget Committee Chairman Joey Manahan would be advised to come up with a better solution to ending the rail mess short of Ala Moana, than writing an amendment taking money out of the city’s regular operating budget. The city continues to fall short on regular maintenance and needs to budget money for those daily necessities.
