Deal with non-owner-occupied short-term rentals first, and wait to see what happens. The passage of City Council Bills 85 and 89 would have strong negative, unintended consequences for many Hawaii residential property owners (“Council balks at vacation rentals decision,” Star-Advertiser, May 9).
I am biased. I am the owner-occupant of a short-term vacation rental. I am a retired Department of Education counselor, widower and U.S. Marine Corps veteran. I need the income to help my adult children and grandson, and to pay my substantial residential mortgage.
I have legitimate reasons not to want a long-term permanent lease for my property. There are two other owner- occupied Airbnb properties on our small cul-de-sac street of 12 homes. We have adequate parking and do not disturb our neighbors.
Please do not add a hotel tax to our properties. This increases our financial burden. Please allow us to responsibly use our property to gain income, pay our bills and remain in Hawaii. Affordable housing is a very real concern also for those of us who own and reside in long-term homes.
