The triathlon course includes a 1.5-kilometer swim at Ala Moana Beach Park, followed by a 40-kilometer swim that starts at Magic Island and heads down Ala Moana, Lagoon and Nimitz.

Early morning lane closures are scheduled from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Lagoon Drive, Nimitz Highway, and Ala Moana Boulevard for the Honolulu Triathlon on Sunday, state transportation officials said.

The triathlon course includes a 1.5-kilometer swim at Ala Moana Beach Park, followed by a 40-kilometer bike ride that starts at Magic Island and heads down Ala Moana, Lagoon and Nimitz. The 10-kilometer run also starts at Magic Island and takes place within Ala Moana Beach Park.

Traffic modifications will be as follows:

>> Eastbound lanes of Ala Moana from Atkinson Drive will be closed at 4 a.m. As triathletes progress along the course, crews will pick up cones and open lanes.

>> Access to the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and Lagoon Drive will be available via the H-1 freeway. Access to Elliott Street will be available via Aolele Street. The triathlon closures near the airport are expected to reopen at 8:30 a.m.

>> Sand Island Access Road will be accessible from the H-1 westbound viaduct, but those wanting to continue past Sand Island Access Road on Nimitz Highway are advised to use alternate routes such as the H-1 or Dillingham Boulevard.

Electronic message boards have been placed to inform motorists of the closures. Motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time, use alternate routes, and drive with caution through the race areas.
