University of Hawaii volleyball learns semifinal opponent as Lewis beats USC

LONG BEACH, Calif. >> Junior hitter Ryan Coenen put down 17 kills and Lewis eliminated USC from the NCAA men’s volleyball tournament tonight, defeating the Trojans 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23 in a first-round match at the Walter Pyramid.

The Flyers (26-5) advance to meet top-seeded Hawaii (27-2) in Thursday’s first semifinal (2 p.m.). The winner of tonight’s second match between Pepperdine and Princeton will face second-seeded and host Long Beach State in Thursday’s second semifinal.

Lewis, the MIVA champion, outblocked the Trojans (18-11) 17.5-9, with sophomore middle TJ Murray in on 10.

USC, an at-large selection, got 16 kills from senior hitter Gianluca Grasso.
