Astronauts Wally Schirra, left, Neil Armstrong and David Scott leave Hickam Airfield after a stopover on their flight from Naha, Okinawa, to Florida following the Gemini 8 spacefl ight. Armstrong and Scott had performed the first-ever docking of two spacecraft in Earth orbit, but control problems forced them to separate their Gemini 8 capsule from the Agenda target vehicle early and splash down in the Pacific at a backup target site.

Soda fountains used to be the place to gather to sip a milkshake and chat with friends. But the era of fast food and the faster pace of younger customers have made the fountains a dying breed. Those still around, like Aotani Fountain in Kaimuki, are scattered around town and rely on die-hard customers for business.

The beachboys organized by the Outrigger Beach Services gave free outrigger canoe rides to guests at The Royal Hawaiian hotel. The organization’s services included canoeing, surfing, glass-bottom boating, sailing, spearfishing, lomilomi and music and hula lessons. Standing around a canoe are Curly Cornwall, left, Walter Young, Harry Robello, Panama Dave Baptiste, Sally Hale and Duke Kahanamoku’s younger brother Louis Kahanamoku.
