Hawaii close to decriminalizing marijuana possession

Hawaii is poised to become one of a growing number of states to decriminalize the recreational use of marijuana after key members of the state House and Senate agreed to a bill that would impose $130 fines for people caught with 3 grams of marijuana or less.

House Bill 1383 would also allow for the expungement of criminal records for those convicted of possession of three grams of marijuana or less.

The measure still needs final votes in the state House and Senate before it can be sent to the governor for final decision making.

Twenty-two states, as well as Washington, D.C., have decriminalized the possession of certain amounts of marijuana, according to the measure.

Another bill that would have legalized marijuana in Hawaii died earlier this year.
