Kauai police discovered the body of a man along a cliff at Waimea Canyon.

The body of a man was found Tuesday afternoon along a cliff at Waimea Canyon, Kauai police announced today.

Police were called at 6 p.m. to the area of the 5.5-mile marker on Waimea Canyon Drive, where a bystander had been scouting the area for goats when he spotted a body roughly 200 feet below.

Emergency personnel were unable to get to the area that day because of the dangerous terrain and the pending darkness.

Kauai fire personnel and police began recovering the body Wednesday morning.

Firefighters at about 12:15 p.m. began using a high-angle rope rescue system, and hauled the man’s body at about 4 p.m.

Air 1 helicopter assisted by transporting the body to a nearby landing zone.

An autopsy is scheduled to identify the man and determine the cause of death.

Police are continuing their investigation. The case is currently classified as an unattended death.

Anyone with information on the man’s identity or this incident is urged to call Assistant Chief Bryson Ponce at 241-1681 or police dispatch at 241-1711.

Those wishing to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers Kauai at 246-8300.
