The spell has been lifted.
‘Iolani’s title drought in Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys volleyball finally came to an end on Tuesday night with a 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Punahou in the championship match at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
‘Iolani will have the league’s seeded berth in the upcoming state championships, while Punahou will be unseeded for the first time since 2003, which is the last time the Raiders won the league crown.
“They executed better than we did. We just need to execute better when teams make runs,” veteran Punahou coach Rick Tune said after his team’s streak of 14 league titles in a row came to an end.
Kupono Browne led ‘Iolani with 18 kills, while Kawika Lee tallied 12 and Makani Hiltner added nine.
“He’s terminating the ball for us,” ‘Iolani coach Jordan Inafuku said. “That’s his job.”
Against Punahou’s talented block, the Raiders hit .384. Overall, they were simply more efficient from start to finish, practically prepared to win.

“I think that’s the best compliment we could get for the kids. We prepare them as best as possibly can,” Inafuku said. “The most satisfying thing had nothing to do with our game plan. We were siding out and we were poised in serve-receive for the most part throughout the match. They were able to play freely and execute.”
Setter Shane Harimoto was on point with 43 assists, three aces and one very timely kill late in the third set.
“Their setter is the best in the state,” Tune noted. “He showed me a lot.”
Libero Jarin Simon was sometimes spectacular, saving loose balls heading out of bounds 40, 50 feet from the net.
“That’s the example Jarin is setting. He’s giving up his body, a never-say-die attitude. That’s expected, but he’s also leading the serve-receive, keeping them calm, keeping them focused. We have to control the ball well to score points, and they know that,” Inafuku said. “They deserve a lot of credit.”
Kawai Hong and Jack Deuchar paced Punahou with 10 kills apiece. Robert Allen and Jakob Kimura chipped in eight kills each. Claudio Clini had seven kills and three aces. Keegan Au Yuen had 23 assists and Connor McInerny had 18. Jackson Kim proved a spark in the fourth set with seven assists and three aces.
Punahou hit .307 as a team, and had four aces, but committed 10 service errors. ‘Iolani had three aces and just four service errors.
“We live to play another day,” Tune said. “We’ve got one week of practice.”
