Hawaii Pacific won the men’s and women’s titles at the PacWest Tennis Championships on Saturday in Surprise, Ariz.
The top-seeded Hawaii Pacific men beat second-seeded Hawaii Hilo 4-2 in the championship match for their sixth PacWest crown in seven years.
The second-seeded Sharks women toppled top-seeded Academy of Art 4-1 for their second consecutive league title.
Both teams earned the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The HPU men got singles victories from Valentin Masse, Cheng-Chieh Wang and Lukas Bauer. The Sharks won the doubles point behind wins by Masse/Maxine Gayte and Ondrej Ctverak/ Benjamin Loccisano.
Hilo’s Alessandro Giuliato and Martin Soukal won singles matches. The Vulcans have a good chance to make the NCAA tournament.
The HPU women got singles victories from Mihoki Miyahara, Sara Ikioka and Heloise Le Normand. The Sharks earned the doubles point with victories from Elodie Busson/Elisa Elhadj and Miyahara/Sara Ikioka.
The NCAA Division II West Regionals for men and women will start in mid-May.
Hilo, Chaminade split in softball
The Hawaii Hilo and Chaminade softball teams split a doubleheader Saturday at UHH field.
In the first game, Madelyn Stockslager pitched a two-hitter and Kiana Ulufale hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to lift the Silverswords to a 2-1 victory.
In the second game, Valerie Alvarado pitched a five-hitter and Markie Okamoto drove in two runs in the Vulcans’ 9-1 win in five innings.
Chaminade moved to 12-34, 9-25 PacWest, while the Vulcans went to 29-16, 22-10.
Biola knocks off HPU in baseball
Christian Kapeliela batted 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and Jalen Bustos went 3-for-4, but the Hawaii Pacific baseball team lost to Biola 9-6 on Saturday in La Mirada, Calif.
Jake Selco also homered for the Sharks (21-25, 8-20 PacWest).
Robert Anthony Cruz drove in four runs for the Eagles (24-16, 15-13).
Oshiro, Seng to speak at Quarterback Club
Hawaii Baptist athletic director Deren Oshiro and track and field/cross country athlete Johanna Seng will be the featured speakers at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at Maple Garden Restaurant.
Oshiro, in his 19th year as the AD at HBA, has helped expand the school’s sports program from 27 teams to 47.
Seng currently is ranked 36th in the nation in the 3,000 meters and 40th in the 1,500 meters.
The luncheon, which costs $17, starts at 11:30 a.m. and the program will follow at noon.
