Crowd greets Hokule‘a at the Ala Wai to celebrate end of Mahalo, Hawaii Sail

A crowd greets the Hokule‘a as it arrives today at the Ala Wai promenade near the Hawai‘i Convention Center. The crew celebrated the end of the Mahalo, Hawaii Sail, the last stop of the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage.
Dozens of people lined along the Ala Wai promenade this morning as the Hokule‘a voyaging canoe sailed through the canal toward the Hawai‘i Convention Center for its final stop of the Mahalo, Hawaii Sail.
The double-hulled sailing vessel arrived directly behind the center shortly before 9:30 a.m., where crews and students aboard were greeted with oli (chant).
Dockside tours are being held today through 4 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Hokule‘a’s final stop of the statewide sail focuses on efforts by students, community organizations and businesses that are working to restore the Ala Wai Watershed.

In addition to the dockside tours, a community fair is being held on the promenade until 4 p.m. today where advocates are available to inform the public of how they can get involved.
The Hokule‘a began its Mahalo, Hawaii Sail around the state in August 2017, two months after turning from its three-year worldwide voyage dubbed Malama Honua (“Care for the Earth”).
The statewide sail took place to thank communities for supporting the voyage.
