What is the big deal with road usage fees (“Final road usage charge meetings set,” Star-Advertiser, April 15)? Why are taxpayers forced to fund studies regarding the feasibility of this tax system? How will we pay the tax? How often: monthly, quarterly, yearly? Who will ensure our miles are accurately reported?
The problem is that electric-vehicle owners are not paying the gasoline tax used to maintain our roads, yet they contribute as much wear and tear as all other vehicles. EV owners are afforded many perks the rest of us do not have access to: use of HOV lanes, free parking, free charging stations at business owners’ expense, and more.
The solution is simple. Charge the road usage fee to owners of electric vehicle owners only. EV owners need to pay their fair share.
