Otto Cleveland claimed that it can take six months to two years to receive cataract surgery in England — and “socialized” medicine is the cause (“Socialized medicine would be harmful,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, April 14). I checked with a friend in England who said his wait for cataract surgery was three weeks. In Hawaii I can wait six months or more for an appointment to see some kinds of doctors.
My doctors tell me that the U.S. health care system is being destroyed by insurance and drug companies that keep them from practicing good medicine. These companies spread fear of “socialized” medicine to prevent changes that threaten their profits. America’s health care system was once among the best but, according to medical professionals, it’s now failing.
Corporate profit should not be a consideration in finding solutions.
