Utility pole on fire forces road closure, causes power outages in Kalihi
The intersection of North King Street and Gulick Avenue remains closed due to a utility pole that was on fire this afternoon.
Honolulu police sent out the alert at about 2:15 p.m.
Hawaiian Electric Co. spokeswoman Shannon Tangonan said that 1,210 customers were without power in the Kalihi area because HECO had to de-energized the pole due to a smoldering fire. She said the pole was also leaning.
At 5 p.m., Hawaiian Electric said power was restored to all customers in the Kalihi area except for eight commercial accounts. Those customers will not have service until the pole is replaced, which is expected to be completed by Thursday morning.
Two lanes of N. King St in the Ewa-bound direction will be closed during this time; the Honolulu-bound lanes will be contra-flowed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
