HILTON BARS CONCOCT COCKTAILS FOR A CAUSE
Have a drink and support the rainforest through Cocktails for a Cause, an Earth Day celebration at the five Hilton hotels on Oahu.
From Monday, Earth Day, through May 27, each Hilton bar will feature a specialty cocktail that highlights local farms or distilleries. A dollar from the sale of each drink will go to the Ko‘olau Mountains Watershed Partnership and its work to protect native rainforests.
Participating are the Hilton Waikiki Beach, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Alana, Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk, Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort and Embassy Suites by Hilton in Kapolei.
COOL SUGGESTION WINS PRIZE
A fifth grader at Enchanted Lake Elementary School came up with the name Hula Cooler for a new slush drink and came away with a $1,000 scholarship.
Paul Tavares won first prize in a competition to name a passion fruit, orange and guava drink made by Cool Tropics, a division of Welch’s, for distribution in school cafeterias nationwide.
His award was presented at the school Monday.
Second prize was a tie between A Surfin’ Slush by Colt Dixon of Island Pacific Academy and the similar SurfNSlush by Wynete Agustin of Farrington High School. Both win laptop computers. Third place of a mountain bike went to Max Atuatasi of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, for the suggestion Smashin’ Passion.
A JUICY OPPORTUNITY
Some of Oahu’s youngest entrepreneurs will showcase their business skills and drink-making expertise at Pearlridge Center Saturday.
The annual Lemonade Alley event brings out students in kindergarten through 12th grade for a friendly competition from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mauka (former Uptown) center court, second level.
Besides perfecting their drinks, the students have been designing booths, developing business plans and working on presentation skills, which they will demonstrate for judges at the event.
Purchase a drink and your money will go to a charity chosen by that lemonade team.
NEW KOREAN SPOT OPENS AT PEARLRIDGE
Gen Korean BBQ House has gone west for its second Hawaii location, which marked its grand opening with a celebration Saturday at Pearlridge Center.
The new Gen, in the Wai Makai side of the mall (formely Downtown), seats 380.
The Los Angeles-based chain opened its first Hawaii restaurant at Ala Moana Center in 2017 and is planning other locations in the state. Gen has 30 U.S. locations and one in the Philippines.

At Friday’s Empty Bowl Hawaii benefit, attendees could take home one free handmade bowl — and it was a hard choice for many. Chef Sam Choy ended up with five bowls, paying for the extras.
