Hawaii basketball secures commitment from 6-foot-5 junior-college guard
The University of Hawaii basketball has secured a commitment from a versatile junior-college guard.
Junior Madut, a 6-foot-5 sophomore from Eastern Florida State College, will put his commitment in writing on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA’s spring signing period for basketball prospects.
Madut was the team captain of the Titans, who went 28-8 this past season. Madut averaged 9.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists while defending several positions.
Madut was born in South Sudan but grew up in Australia. Prior to EFSC, Madut attended DME Academy, a prep school in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Madut can play off guard and on the wing.
Forward Jack Purchase and guards Sheriff Drammeh and Brocke Stepteau completed their UH eligibility at the end of the recently completed season. Guard Leland Green is transferring to Humboldt State. Wing Brandon Thomas has requested — and received — a release from his scholarship to transfer to another program.
Madut fills one of the five openings for UH’s 2019 recruiting class. Jessiya Villa, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s 2017 Player of the Year, also is part of this class. Villa, a Kahuku High graduate, spent the past two years on a church mission.
