One of two detainees who escaped from Maui Community Correctional Center turned himself in this afternoon.

State Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Toni E. Schwartz confirms that Barret Paman turned himself in to Maui police just after 3 p.m.

MCCC officials discovered Paman, 31, and Troy Diego, 30, missing about 2:30 this morning after discovering a broken door in the back of their dormitory building. They later found clothing in the razor wire at the top of the north-facing perimeter fence of the facility.

Diego remains at large.

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino urged residents in a written statement to “stay calm but remain vigilant.”

DPS and Maui police caution people not to approach Diego if they see him but to call 911.

Correction: A Hawaii Department of Public Safety press release incorrectly identified Barret Paman.
