State Department of Education Superintendent Christina Kishimoto challenged the media to rate private schools just as they rate our public schools (“Superintendent denounces ‘double standard’ in school rankings by Honolulu Magazine,” Star-Advertiser, April 5). I salute her in her calling out reporters for their inconsistency in providing information to the public regarding all schools in the islands.
Yes, the DOE does make statistics and most information available to the media and public regarding our public schools. This information is important and is needed.
Media representatives also should receive and distribute academic and other information on private schools. If it is not provided to them, then they should ask. If asking doesn’t produce the information, then the public should be informed of that as well.
I salute Kishimoto in bringing this private school ratings data vacuum to our attention for us to think about and perhaps do something about.
